What do clinical trials look like for patients?
Key information for people considering participation in a clinical trial.
What is a clinical trial?
Before a new medicine becomes widely available, it must go through a structured process that evaluates safety and efficacy. Clinical trials are scientific programs conducted with volunteers, usually patients living with a specific medical condition.
Clinical research does not mean blind experimentation. It is protocol-based, supervised and documented. Participants receive detailed information, medical assessment and ongoing monitoring.
Who can participate?
Eligibility depends on each study protocol. Because Promente conducts research into medicines for defined conditions, participants are usually people with a confirmed diagnosis, for example treatment-resistant depression or early Alzheimer disease.
Place of residence does not automatically exclude participation. Where a protocol allows it, logistics such as travel and accommodation costs may be covered or reimbursed.
- Study-related visits, tests and procedures are covered within the protocol.
- Participants are monitored more closely than during a typical outpatient visit.
- The participant has access to information and can ask questions at every stage.
Informed consent
Before joining a study, the candidate receives an informed consent form. It explains the purpose of the study, known data, potential benefits, risks, visits and participant rights.
Signing informed consent does not remove the right to withdraw. A participant may leave a clinical trial according to the consent process without losing the right to regular medical care.
The role of an informant or caregiver
Some studies, especially those involving cognitive disorders, may require a close person who knows the participant day-to-day functioning. This person helps the research team understand changes that may not be visible during a single clinic visit.
